Helps Beyond Meds

Of course I take  my prescription meds as directed by my doctor, but there are other things I have found helpful.

Vaseline
Every night I put Vaseline on my lips to help with the chapped lips that I constantly seem to have.  I am not sure if dry lips and skin have anything to do with asthma, or if it is totally unrelated, but it is bothersome.  I also tend to breathe through my mouth when I run and exercise which tends to dry them out quickly.  Before I run, I put a layer of Vaseline on and that has helped a lot with dry, chapped lips.  I've tried lip balms, but they don't last as long as Vaseline.  I've even purchased one of the .25 oz mini jars, the mini squeeze tub, and the new small tin and keep those available for my longer runs--they are tiny, cute, and portable!  I also use vaseline before bed on my cuticles and heels.  I've even slathered vaseline on my feet and hands, then put on gloves and socks for a deep moisturizing  treatment.  So Vaseline is one item I don't like to be without.

Netipot
If you have heard of these, you might be a little skeptical.  I was too, but using a netipot was recommended to my husband by his doctor, so he was already using it.  The whole premise of a netipot is that it uses saline water to clean out the nose and wash away pollen and such.  When I have more issues, I use the netipot every day, usually in the morning.  When allergens are not bothering me as much, I use it every other day.  If I've been working outside or cleaning a lot, then I use it afterwards.  The directions say to boil tap water or use distilled water.  I like warm water for the pot (cold can be a little shocking as it flows through), and used to use warm tap water.  That is, until I heard stories about people who had used tap water in their Neti pots and died from infections from the tap water..  Now, I have a better and safer plan.  I fill the sink with hot water.  I pour distilled water in my pot and add the saline packet. Then I let the pot sit in the hot water and warm up while I shower.  After showering, I then use the netipot to clean my nose.  I don't recommend using it right before going to bed, since some water needs a little time and gravity to come out.  This is a safe, easy, and effective way to help combat allergies that may affect asthma.  I use the NeilMed version called the Nasa Flo Netipot.

Neutrogena Naturals Bar Soap
As I've said before, my skin can be very dry.  I have tried various soaps, gels, and cleansers, but always have to put on tons of lotion to keep from flaking.  That is, until I found this bar soap.  With all the liquid soaps out there, one would think bar soaps were obsolete.  But this soap has changed my showering days. After the first time I used the soap, I could notice a difference--my skin was softer and not as dry.  This soap has made such a hit in my family, that everyone now uses the soap, I even send it to college with my girls.  It may seem a bit more expensive than cheaper soaps (about $3-4 a bar), but I've decided that my skin is definitely worth it.  Unfortunately, we have now found out that this bar is not being made anymore!  Everything I tend to like goes out of style!  Some complaints by other people were that the bar was "too oily" but I never felt that, but maybe because I need lots of moisture.  For now we have ordered several bars and are using it.  Next a hunt to find another great soap that is moisturizing.

Aveeno Lotion
Now, just because I use Neutrogena soap, doesn't mean I don't need lotion.  I have used Aveeno Skin Relief cream (used to be called Intense Relief) in a jar (the one with the blue lid) for years.  When my skin was drier, I put this on my whole body.  Now I use it when I've gotten a little sun or sunburn, and on my heels and hands every night.  This lotion will smooth my skin without feeling greasy or having a strong odor.  I have gotten rid of my cracked heels by using this lotion nightly in conjunction with a pumice stone a couple of times a week in the shower.  Unfortunately, this formula isn't as strong and moisturizing as the one a few years ago.  It was called "Intense Relief" and was in a blue lid jar.  Once again--something I loved is now gone! --I've just found it in a red lid online, so we'll see if it is as good as the old version.
I also keep the unscented pump lotion (Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion) on my desk, in the family room, and in my bathroom for a quick squirt on dry hands.
